Free Summer Camp Preview

New camp families can join us for a special preview full of fun for the whole family! Camp Preview Time is a chance for families who are new to our camps or want to learn more about our offerings. This can help prepare kids for camp, help siblings feel included, and inform parents of what to expect. Register to attend this free event and experience a sampling of life at camp, plus a whole lot of fun.

Already know you want to participate in our camps, go straight to our registration page. Family Members and above can sign up on Friday, February 13, and registration is open for everyone on Friday, February 27.

Details
Cost: Free
Registration: Required so we can prepare supplies for everyone; limit is 30 families.
Location: At the Museum
Age Range: Ages K-5, adults must accompany children
What to Expect: A fun sampling of camp activities that our K-5 campers get to experience during the summer. Families will enjoy circle time, games, science, and the opportunity to connect with other camp families and friends.
Accessibility: The Museum is an accessible space and welcomes everyone excited to learn. If any participants have additional needs, we are happy to help. Please reach out to education@pgmuseum.org and let us know how we can make your day feel fun and accessible.

Member Brown Bag: Psycho Cactus, Qu'est que c'est? Adaptions of California's Mojave Desert

Lizards that thrive at temperatures of 110 F, plants that clone themselves then poison the soil around them, cacti that have hooks for spines and disperse in 40mph winds, and 500-year-old Joshua Trees! We’re heading south of Monterey County in this special Brown Bag talk about the amazing plants and animals of the Mojave Desert, and the ways in which they survive and thrive in such a harsh environment. Get ready for a fun time with surprising facts, beautiful photos, and a journey in place to one of the coolest places in the world! Enjoy a cookie on us and bring your lunch if you’d like to this fun talk!

Free for PG Museum Members, $5 for Member guests. This talk is for Members and their guests only and not open to the public.
Why $5 for Guests? We love offering free events for members, and we’re always happy to see their guests, but these events do have a cost, so we ask for a nominal fee to help us cover it from non-members.

What to Expect: Your registration includes entry to the talk and a fun half hour learning about amazing ecological processes with other members and friends. You are welcome to bring your lunch to enjoy while the talk occurs.

Everyone’s favorite exhibit returns on May 1! Join us for a special night celebrating science illustration and the incredible artists who create it with the graduating class of CSUMB’s Science Illustration program! Enjoy the art, meet the artists, and come back throughout the month for fun events combining science and art including:

  • An artist market with the featured artists on 5/22

  • Artist demos on 5/16 & 30

  • Art workshops with wonderful program alumni

The Walk of Remembrance celebrates the impact of the villagers, their descendants, and their deep histories and wonderful impact on Monterey County and beyond. The best market of the year is back! Support the graduates of the Science Illustration program by purchasing their artwork at the third annual Illustrating Nature Artist Market. Prints, stickers, magnets, and some originals will be available for purchase, as well as some fun surprises. Often, artists will also have pieces for sale that aren’t part of the show itself, so it’s a great behind the scenes peek of even more science illustration. Every cent of your purchase goes straight back to the graduates, who are not charged to participate. A perfect opportunity to purchase something for yourself or a loved one from a talented local artist, we hope we’ll get to see you on this fun night!

Science on Tap: Great White Sharks

Take a deep dive into great white sharks with Dr. Barbara Block and her team Monterey Bay White Sharks out of Hopkins University! Dr. Block has worked with filmmakers to create an incredible new short documentary that will be shown as well as discussions and insights with audience Q&A to create a memorable night. Participants will leave with new knowledge about this important species. Featured speakers will include Dr. Block, a pioneer in shark research, renowned marine biologist Dr. Dan Costa, and award-winning filmmaker Kip Evans, all of whom have a deep knowledge and fascination with great white sharks and the roles they play in their ecosystems.

Some details:

Your ticket entitles you to entry to the event, participation in the happy half-hour with one drink and food selection, and a seat in the lecture.
Students up the undergraduate level may come to the lecture for free with a valid student ID and pay a reduced price if they’d like to join the happy half-hour with drinks and food.

Ticket Pricing:
General: $25
Museum Member: $10 special price in the month of March!
Student: Up to undergrads free with valid ID

We’ll be opening our doors at 5:20. The Pebble Beach Pro-Am was pushed forward by two weeks this year, so please give yourself ample time for parking and getting to the Museum before 6pm for the start of the talk.

Please note: This talk was scheduled before the tragic passing of Erica Fox. Erica was a wonderful member of our community, and we pay deep respect to her memory and legacy when discussing these animals and our marine ecosystems.

We are excited to partner with the Monterey Regional Airport and incredible artists and craftspeople for a beautiful new exhibit: The Art of Observation: Recording Monterey County’s Natural World! The exhibition will be featured at the airport through next spring, and on 3/24 we’ll have a special ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Monterey and Pacific Grove Chambers of Commerce at the airport. We hope to see you there to celebrate this wonderful new spotlight of Monterey County’s art, nature, and cultures!

SOLD OUT -History on Tap: The Women Who Shaped the Central Coast

Join us for a fantastic evening telling the stories of the women who shaped, and saved, the Central Coast! We’ll hear from the wonderful Kathryn McKenzie and Dr. Stephen Palumbi about women politicians, scientists, and changemakers who made this special place what it is today, both in habitats and people. Topics include Julia Platt, PG’s first woman mayor and the reason behind much of our marine conservation work, Minnie Coyle, Monterey's first and only woman mayor, Ruth Andresen, a tireless volunteer and activist in Salinas, and Julie Packard, founder of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

With a generous sponsorship by Hops & Fog and a look into the deep history of women’s impacts on our county, the night should be a fun one and audiences should leave feeling knowledgeable and energized!
