Join us for a special talk on white sharks with a focus on their conservation! Dr. Chris Lowe of CSLB’s Shark Lab will be joined by fellow expert John O’Sullivan to discuss these incredible animals, their biology, and what we can do to help them! Sharks are often misunderstood and villainized, this will be an exciting opportunity to learn about the truth of white sharks and the way they work in the world. We hope you’ll enjoy this special opportunity to learn from some of the top researchers in the field about these amazing animals!

This is also the opening day for his exhibition, Along the Pacific Edge on view until September 14th. Tidepool Field Sketching with Andrea Dingeldein

Take your creativity to the tidepools with the amazing Andrea Dingeldein, aka The Local Naturalist! Artists of all knowledge, skills, and levels are welcome to come learn about the sea creatures found in the tidepools and do their own field sketch of the space or something they view in the pools. All materials will be provided, but if anyone wants to bring their own they are welcome to. We recommend wearing footwear that can climb around tidepools, clothing that allows warmth and flexibility, and sun protection with water and a snack.

Location: Location will be sent to participants closer to the time when we decide on the best possible location, expect somewhere semi-easy to access and close to PG!

What to Expect: Your registration includes participation in a fun tidepool workshop where you’ll learn about the tidepools and animals living in them as well as how to sketch and paint them in the field. Beginner to masters level are all encouraged to join, this class is open and welcome to everyone. All materials will be provided for those who would like them.

The best market of the year is back! Support the graduates of the Science Illustration program by purchasing their artwork at the third annual Illustrating Nature Artist Market. Prints, stickers, magnets, and some originals will be available for purchase, as well as some fun surprises. Often, artists will also have pieces for sale that aren’t part of the show itself, so it’s a great behind the scenes peek of even more science illustration. Every cent of your purchase goes straight back to the graduates, who are not charged to participate. A perfect opportunity to purchase something for yourself or a loved one from a talented local artist, we hope we’ll get to see you on this fun night!

  • Art workshops with wonderful program alumni

Member Brown Bag: Psycho Cactus, Qu'est que c'est? Adaptions of California's Mojave Desert

Lizards that thrive at temperatures of 110 F, plants that clone themselves then poison the soil around them, cacti that have hooks for spines and disperse in 40mph winds, and 500-year-old Joshua Trees! We’re heading south of Monterey County in this special Brown Bag talk about the amazing plants and animals of the Mojave Desert, and the ways in which they survive and thrive in such a harsh environment.
