City Hall, the first reinforced
concrete building on the Monterey Peninsula, under construction
in 1912. The structure was built by the Chivers brothers for
$6,000 payable in gold. Carpenters on the top of the tower scaffolding
include Bill Sweeney, Richard Chivers, George Turner, and Frank

A plume of dark smoke from the Monterey
oil tank fire looms over Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove on
September 14, 1924. Sparked when an unseasonable lightning strike
hit a 55,000-gallon oil tank located near Presidio Curve, the
blaze raged on for three days. PGFD assisted in fighting the

Four men enjoy the grounds of the
Carnegie Public Library, shortly after its construction. The
Mission/Spanish Colonial-style building was designed by the McDougall

Men play croquet at the side of the original octagon museum. The building originally belonged to the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. In July 1900 it was given to the Museum Association, an organisation headed by Mary E.B. Norton. In 1902, the Pacific Improvement Company deeded the half block and buildings to the Association. The Congregational Church on Central
Avenue under construction. This wooden building burnt down in
1910, and was replaced with the brick edifice that now houses
