These images of Chinese
village residents were taken
by photographer C.K. Tuttle
on glass plates, sometime
around 1900, and are in the Museum's Tuttle
Collection.
Most of the plates had
the subjects' names scratched
in the negatives' emulsion.
The photos were probably
taken for use on certificates
of residence, mandated by
the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which was extended
again in 1892 and made permanent in 1902.
American citizenship
was denied to all
resident Chinese, and
those without
the certificate faced
deportation.
The Act was
repealed in 1943.
