Studio portrait of bearded Oliver Smith Trimmer, MD. Studio photo taken at J. Ed Bacon, Salinas. Back of cabinet card has 1890 printed on it, but this looks like it was probably talen before then. Dr. Trimmer was an early resident of Pacific Grove, and its first mayor. He was born in December 8, 1833, studied medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Clevland Medical College in Ohio. He married Ashtabula county Ohio native Rhoda Benjamin in 1859. They moved to Salinas, California in 1873, where Dr. Trimmer practiced medicine and served as Monterey County coroner. In 1888, they moved to a small cottage at 6th and Laurel in Pacific Grove. In 1893, the Trimmers built their grand Queen Anne mansion (later known as Trimmer Hill) at the same location.Mrs. Trimmer's niece, Emily Young, married PG pharmacist C.K. Tuttle in January 1888, and many of Tuttle's images include the Trimmer family and home. Trimmer also served as president of PG's first bank. He collapsed while visiting the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, and died a few days later, on July 4, 1915 in Pacific Grove.
