48-year old bearded Oliver
Smith Trimmer, MD. Studio photo taken at WJ Van Diveer, New Gallery,
Main Street, Salinas. Dr. Trimmer was an early resident of Pacific
Grove, and its first mayor. He was born in December 8, 1833,
studied medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and
Cleveland Medical College in Ohio. He married Ashtabula county
Ohio native Rhoda Benjamin in 1859. They moved to Salinas, California
in 1873, where Dr. Trimmer practised medicine and served as Monterey
County coroner. In 1888, they moved to a small cottage at 6th
and Laurel in Pacific Grove. In 1893, the Trimmers built their
grand Queen Anne mansion (later known as Trimmer Hill) at the
same location.Mrs. Trimmer's niece, Emily Young, married PG pharmacist
C.K. Tuttle in January 1888, and many of Tuttle's images include
the Trimmer family and home. Trimmer also served as president
of PG's first bank. He collapsed while visiting the Panama Pacific
Exposition in San Francisco, and died a few days later, on July
4, 1915 in Pacific Grove. |

in San Francisco. She was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio in May
1833, and married Oliver Trimmer in 1859. She was the aunt of
Mrs. Emily Young Tuttle. The Trimmers moved to Salinas in 1873,
and then to Pacific Grove in 1888. She was co-owner of the mansion
that has come to be known as Trimmer Hill, at 6th & Laurel
until her death in 1907, at age 74.
